Arcadius' father, Theodosius I, died in 395. Theodosius I was the last emperor of the Roman Empire to rule over a united empire. After his death, the empire was divided into two parts: the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire. Arcadius became the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, while his brother, Honorius, became the emperor of the Western Roman Empire.
