Arcadius succeeded Theodosius I, becoming emperor of the eastern Roman Empire. Arcadius was only 17 years old when he ascended to the throne, and he was not very effective as an emperor. He was dominated by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia, and by his powerful general, Rufinus. Arcadius died in 408, and was succeeded by his son, Theodosius II.
