Answer
Paula Rego was the second artist-in-residence at the National Gallery after the scheme re-started. She was selected in 1988 to create an exhibition that would bring the work of the 19th-century Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones to a modern audience. The resulting exhibition, Paula Rego: In the Spirit of Burne-Jones, opened in 1990 and was a critical and commercial success.
