Paula Rego was a Portuguese-British artist. She was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1935. She moved to London, England, in 1951 to study at the Slade School of Art. She returned to Portugal in 1963, but continued to travel between the two countries throughout her career. Rego's work is known for its political and social commentary, and she is considered one of the most important contemporary artists.
