Wingate died on 24th March 1944 at the age of 41. He was killed in an air crash in Burma while on a mission to lead a Chindit force behind Japanese lines. Wingate was a highly controversial figure, but he is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant and innovative military commanders of the Second World War.
