E. Max Euwe was a Dutch chess player and mathematician who became the fifth World Chess Champion, holding the title from 1935 to 1937 and again in 1948. He was the first player outside Germany or Russia to win the World Championship, and the first chess champion to be awarded a Ph.D. in mathematics.
