Eugene McCarthy first ran for U.S. President in 1968. He was a Democratic candidate who ran on an anti-Vietnam War platform. McCarthy's campaign gained momentum and he eventually won several primaries, including the New Hampshire primary. However, he was ultimately defeated by Hubert Humphrey at the Democratic National Convention.
