Eugene McCarthy ran for U.S. president five times, in 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1988. He was a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate in all five elections. McCarthy's most successful run was in 1968, when he won the New Hampshire primary and challenged incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson for the Democratic nomination.
