What unique contribution did Buckland make in reconstructing ecosystems?

  • Studying soil layers

  • Using fossilized faeces

  • Mapping wind patterns

  • Tracing animal migrations

Answer

In the 1830s Buckland used fossilized faeces (coprolites) to reconstruct the diet of animals that had long since died. He also used this evidence to make inferences about the environmental conditions that the animals had lived in. This pioneering work was one of the first examples of using fossils to reconstruct ecosystems.
