Schirra was involved in three major space programs: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. He was one of the original seven astronauts selected for Project Mercury, the first human spaceflight program of the United States, and he made his first spaceflight in 1962. He was also part of the Gemini program, which paved the way for the Apollo missions to the Moon, and he commanded the Gemini 6A mission in 1965.
