Ambartsumian began retiring from his positions at the age of 80. He gradually stepped down from his various leadership roles in the scientific community, including his presidency of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and his directorship of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. Despite his retirement, he remained active in research and continued to publish scientific papers until his death at the age of 89.
