In 1930, Robert Merton began working at Harvard University as an assistant professor of sociology. He became a full professor in 1936, and he served as the department chair from 1953 to 1958. During his time at Harvard, Merton developed many of his most important theories, including his work on social stratification and his theory of the self-fulfilling prophecy.
