Stephen A. Douglas was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843. He served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1843 to 1847. During his time in the House, Douglas was a strong advocate for the expansion of the United States into the territories of the West. He also supported the annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War.
