Rudolf Höss was an Obersturmbannführer in the SS, the Nazi Party's paramilitary organization. He was the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp from May 1940 to November 1943, and was responsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.1 million people. Höss was captured by the British in 1945 and executed in 1947.
