Rigoberta Menchú, a Guatemalan indigenous rights activist, was born on January 9, 1959, in the village of Chimel, in the Quiché department of Guatemala. She belongs to the Quiché Maya ethnic group and has dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples, especially women, and against social injustice and discrimination.
