Schüttler defeated Wayne Ferreira in the semi-finals of the 2003 Australian Open to reach his first Grand Slam final. He was the first German man to reach a Grand Slam final since Boris Becker won the Australian Open in 1991. Schüttler went on to lose the final to Roger Federer in straight sets.
