Princess Alice nursed her children back to health from diphtheria before succumbing to the illness herself. Alice, the second daughter of Queen Victoria, married Prince Louis of Hesse and by Rhine in 1862. The couple had seven children together, five of whom died in infancy. In 1878, the family was struck by an outbreak of diphtheria, which claimed the lives of Alice's two youngest daughters, May and Irene.
