Respighi quit his professorship to dedicate himself to touring and composing in 1923. He had been a professor at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome since 1919, but he felt that he needed to devote more time to his own music. He left the academy to tour Europe and the United States, and he continued to compose throughout his career.
