The Australian opera singer Nellie Melba made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1893. She sang the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. Melba was a very popular singer and her performances at the Met were always well-attended. She went on to have a long and successful career, singing in many of the world's leading opera houses.
