Muriel Bowser succeeded Vincent C. Gray as mayor of Washington, D.C. in 2015. Gray had served as mayor since 2010, but was defeated by Bowser in the 2014 Democratic primary election. Bowser went on to win the general election and was inaugurated as mayor on January 2, 2015. She is the first woman to serve as mayor of Washington, D.C.
