Caragiale was a civil servant for much of his adult life. He worked in a number of different positions, including as a clerk, a tax collector, and a director of a state-owned theatre. His work as a civil servant was not particularly successful, and he was often dismissed from his positions. However, his experiences in the civil service provided him with material for his writing.
