In addition to playing, Mahela has been a commentator, coach and manager for Sri Lankan cricket. He was a commentator for several years for both local and international cricket, and he was also the coach of the Sri Lankan national team from 2015 to 2017. In 2018, he became the manager of the Sri Lankan national team, and he has held that position ever since.
