Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 13, 1818. She was the daughter of a farmer and a minister. Stone attended public school and then went on to teach at a local academy. In 1841, she married Henry Blackwell, who was also a prominent abolitionist. Stone and Blackwell were both active in the women's rights movement. In 1855, Stone helped to found the American Woman Suffrage Association.
