Luc Montagnier's main field of study was virology, the study of viruses. He is best known for his work on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. Montagnier and Françoise Barré-Sinoussi shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2008 for their discovery of HIV.
