Joseph de Maistre was born in 1753, in Chambéry, Duchy of Savoy (present-day France). A diplomat, philosopher, and writer, he is considered one of the most prominent thinkers of the counter-Enlightenment and a key figure in the development of conservative thought. He argued for the divine origin of political authority and the importance of tradition, religion, and monarchy in society.
