John Paul Jones, the American Revolutionary War naval hero, was born John Richard Baldwin in Scotland. He was born into a poor family and his father died when he was young. He was apprenticed to a shipbuilder as a teenager and learned to sail. He later moved to America and joined the Continental Navy. He was a brilliant naval commander and led the American fleet to victory in several battles.
