Stark worked as professor at the Leibniz University Hannover from 1906 to 1933. During this time, he conducted research on the electrical conductivity of gases and discovered the Stark effect, which is the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of an electric field. Stark was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1919 for this work.
