Joseph Louis Barrow, better known as Joe Louis, was born on May 13, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of an African American father and a Cherokee mother. Louis grew up in a poor neighborhood and began boxing at the age of 12. He turned professional in 1934 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the heavyweight champion of the world in 1937.
