Answer
The US forces' destruction of Jean Lafitte's base in 1814 severely weakened his piracy operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Lafitte had established a refuge for smugglers, pirates, and other outlaws on Grande Terre, an island near Barataria Bay in present-day Louisiana. He used this base to harass American shipping and raid Spanish colonies.
