Explorer 1 was the first artificial satellite to be placed in orbit by the United States, and the third artificial satellite to be placed into orbit around the Earth. It was launched on January 31, 1958, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Explorer 1 carried a number of scientific instruments, including a Geiger counter, a magnetometer, and a cosmic ray detector.
