In 1963, Johannes Hans Daniel Jensen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the understanding of the structure of the atomic nucleus and for his discoveries concerning nuclear shell structure. Jensen shared the prize with Maria Goeppert-Mayer, who had independently come to similar conclusions.
