Metchnikoff was born in Russia, but he spent much of his professional life in France. He was a professor at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where he conducted research on the immune system. He is best known for his discovery of phagocytosis, the process by which white blood cells engulf and destroy foreign invaders. Metchnikoff's work helped to lay the foundation for the field of immunology.
