Igor Kurchatov was a Russian nuclear physicist who is widely considered to be the father of the Soviet nuclear weapons program. He was born in St. Petersburg in 1903 and studied physics at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. In 1930, he began working at the Leningrad Radium Institute, where he conducted research on nuclear fission.
