Suhrawardy, the premier of Bengal, proposed the Free State of Bengal in 1947, as a solution to the partition of India. He argued that the division of Bengal would be disastrous for the region, and that the only way to prevent it would be to create a separate state for Bengal. However, his proposal was rejected by both the Indian and Pakistani governments, and Bengal was eventually partitioned.
