Henry Parkes was born in 1815 in London, England. He was the son of a wealthy merchant, and he received a good education. He moved to Australia in 1839, and he quickly became involved in politics. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1843 to 1856, and he was the Premier of New South Wales from 1861 to 1863.
