Henry Tudor's rise to prominence was despite his non-elite background. He was born in 1457, the son of Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond and Margaret Beaufort. Edmund was a half-brother of Henry VI, making Henry a distant cousin of the king. However, Edmund died when Henry was only one year old, and Margaret was left to raise him alone.
