Fernando Cortés never married María Cordero. Cortés was married to Catalina Juárez, a woman he had met in Cuba. They were together for 10 years before she died in 1522 of unknown causes. In July 1529, Cortés married his second wife, Doña Juana de Zúñiga, with whom he had at least five legitimate children.
