Ernst Haeckel popularised Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in Germany. He published his own translation of On the Origin of Species, which sold 100,000 copies in its first year. Haeckel also coined the terms "phylum", "phylogeny", and "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny", which became central to evolutionary theory.
