Elihu Root won the 1912 Nobel Peace Prize for his work as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt. He was instrumental in negotiating a number of important treaties, including the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo-Japanese War. He also helped to establish the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
