Edgar Allen died on duty with the United States Coast Guard on 13 December 1979 when his ship was rammed by a Soviet freighter in the North Sea. Allen was the captain of the Coast Guard cutter Point Judith, which was on a training mission with the Royal Navy frigate HMS Yarmouth when the Soviet freighter, the Pyotr Vasev, struck the Point Judith in the stern.
