King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church during Clement VII's reign. He did this because he wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope refused to grant Henry a divorce, so Henry declared himself head of the Church of England and started the Reformation in England.
