Before Cai Lun invented paper in the 2nd century, bamboo and wooden slips were the main writing material. These materials were heavy, cumbersome, and time-consuming to produce. Paper was much lighter and easier to transport, and could be mass-produced. As a result, paper quickly replaced bamboo and wooden slips as the primary writing material in China and later spread to the rest of the world.
