Aleksandar Stamboliyski was the leader of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union and Prime Minister in 1919. He was a strong advocate for agrarian reform and was instrumental in the establishment of the Bulgarian peasantry as a political force. Stamboliyski's government was overthrown in a military coup in 1923, and he was assassinated the following year.
