Auguste François was a French Catholic missionary and explorer who lived in China from 1853 to 1873. He was born in 1820 in Nancy, France, and died in 1882 in Paris. François served in southern China, where he worked to convert the Chinese to Catholicism. He also studied the Chinese language and culture, and wrote several books about his experiences.
