Answer
The maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) was the predecessor to the laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). Both devices use stimulated emission of radiation to amplify a signal, but the maser uses microwaves and the laser uses light. The maser was invented in 1952 by Charles Townes, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 with Arthur Schawlow and Nicolay Basov.
