The cardigan, a knitted sweater or jacket, often buttoned down the front, gained popularity thanks to the seventh Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell. During the Crimean War, he led the Charge of the Light Brigade, famously wearing a knitted waistcoat which later inspired the garment to be named after him.
