The original Celsius temperature scale was inverted. In 1742, Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius proposed a temperature scale in which 0 °C represented the boiling point of water and 100 °C the freezing point of water. However, in 1745, he reversed the scale so that 0 °C represented the freezing point of water and 100 °C the boiling point of water. This is the scale that is still in use today.
