Answer
The answer is Danegeld. Danegeld was a tribute paid by the English to the Danish king in the 10th and 11th centuries. The first recorded payment of Danegeld was in 991, when King Æthelred the Unready paid 10,000 pounds of silver to the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard.
