Born in the Grand Duchy of Finland, a former autonomous region of the Russian Empire, he was the second son of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna. His early life was marked by political instability and the assassination of his father in 1894, which led to his accession to the throne at the age of 26.
